Discretionary Grant Awards
July 2000 - Present

The Crawford Heritage Foundation has improved Crawford County by supporting a variety of programs through discretionary grants from the Crawford Heritage Foundation Unrestricted Fund, Ben Franklin Trust and Fred Lintner Fund. To-date, more than $90,000 has been awarded to 55 different organizations. Following is the list of programs with a short description of the grant. Organization names are highlighted in bold.

July 2002 Unrestricted Cochranton Area Greenways, Inc. was given a grant towards creation of a two-mile walking/biking trail around the borough of Cochranton. $1,300

July 2003 Unrestricted/Franklin The Academy Theatre Foundation received a grant to provide scholarships for low-income young people to attend the “Academy Kidz Summer Theatre Day Camp.” The camp is designed to build participants confidence and instill an appreciation of the performing arts. $325
July 2003 Unrestricted A grant was made towards the Meadville Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s “Youth Business Education Program.” The program develops the area’s future workforce through educational programs teaching high school students about business, economics and the free enterprise system. $750
July 2003 Unrestricted/Franklin The Titusville Council on the Arts presented a diverse mix of musical art forms to the community as part of their “Summer Concert Series” with the assistance of a grant. $500
July 2003 Unrestricted As part of “Make A Difference Day,” The United Way of Western Crawford County coordinated volunteer completion of nearly thirty maintenance and renovation projects for low-income homeowners and senior citizens with a grant towards materials. $1,600

Jan. 2004 Franklin The Conneaut Valley Economic and Industrial Development Agency was able to defray a portion of the costs of paving the parking area and towpath at the Conneaut Valley Historical Canal Park with grant funding. $350

July 2004 Unrestricted Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship, Inc. received a grant to assist with the presentation of Pin Points Traveling Theatre’s play, “1001 Black Inventions” at Meadville Senior High School. $1,000

July 2004 Lintner Titusville Renaissance, Inc. received funding towards the purchase of trees as part of a downtown beautification project near the Drake Mall parking lot. $2,000

Jan. 2005 Unrestricted The Conneaut Lake Institute received $600 towards restoration of the 1925 Kurtzmann grand piano at the Hotel Conneaut. $600
Jan. 2005 Unrestricted The Crawford County Extension Association used a $500 grant to provide scholarships for teen leadership programs. $500
Jan. 2005 Unrestricted The Crawford County Literacy Council’s READ Program works to increase adult and family literacy. A grant helped them purchase two computers and a printer. Program staff use the equipment to prepare, implement and monitor education plans. $1,000
Jan. 2005 Unrestricted The French Creek Valley Railroad Historical Society used a grant to assist in the acquisition of an Erie-Lackawanna Railroad caboose for an exhibit in Meadville. $450

Jan. 2005 Lintner Genesis Project, Inc. was awarded a grant towards start-up of a substance-abuse monitoring system. The program provides recovery support and monitoring for those who have completed court-ordered rehabilitation. $1,500
Jan. 2005 Lintner The Oil Creek Railway Historical Society used a grant to create an exhibit in an historic caboose in Titusville. $1,000
Jan. 2005 Lintner A grant to the Titusville Area School District defrayed part of the cost for a senior-class field trip to Pittsburgh. The students studied the Titanic exhibit at the Carnegie Science Center and saw a production of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest.” They subsequently used the experience to prepare lessons for future classes. $500
Jan. 2005 Lintner With a grant, the Titusville Lions Club improved the security of the Scheide Park Gazebo through the purchase of a surveillance camera to assist in deterring vandalism. $1,000
Jan. 2005 Lintner The Titusville Summer Theater received a grant for $500 to help subsidize the cost to produce “The Music Man,” keeping ticket costs affordable to the community. $500
July 2005 Unrestricted Women’s Services’ domestic violence shelter serves women and children escaping abusive situations. Program supplies purchased helped to aid in their recovery. $530
July 2005 Lintner A grant to Associated Charities of Titusville was used towards improvements to their building. The renovations helped them to more effectively accomplish their mission. $2,000
July 2005 Lintner The “IMPACT Adult Mentoring Program” of the YWCA of Titusville was given a grant towards providing mentors to assist people with mental health concerns between visits to a counselor $575
July 2005 Unrestricted Crawford County Safe Kids’ “Cribs for Kids” campaign received a grant to help provide cribs and educational materials to low-income families to reduce the risk of SIDS and accidental suffocation. $500
July 2005 Unrestricted The “NeighborKids Academy,” a summer day program  for children sponsored by UCIP, received a grant. Through music, art and cultural activities, participants improved their educational development and self-esteem. $500
July 2005 Unrestricted For the enjoyment and safety of children in their program, the YWCA Twin Creeks Head Start improved an outdoor play space with grant assistance. $1,000
July 2005 Lintner The YMCA of Titusville received a grant for “Kinder Art Gym and Swim.” This pre-school program provided a variety of activities for children ages 3-5 to prepare them for kindergarten. $1,000
July 2005 Unrestricted With their grant, the YMCA of Meadville purchased computers for their “Youth and Teen Center” to enhance a youth tutoring program. $1,000
July 2005 Lintner The Hydetown Volunteer Fire Department received a grant towards purchase of computer software and hardware. The new system is used to meet County, State and Federal information and record-keeping requirements. $1,000
July 2005 Unrestricted The Titusville Council on the Arts presented a diverse mix of musical art forms to the community as part of their “Summer Concert Series” with the assistance of a grant. $1,000

Jan. 2006 Unrestricted/Franklin The Crawford County READ Program (Crawford County Literacy Council, Inc.) was given a grant to purchase books for literacy instruction at the Crawford County Correctional Facility. Assignments based upon the books helped to improve basic reading, writing and work-related skills in an effort to prepare inmates for post-release life and reduce the risk of recidivism. $700
Jan. 2006 Lintner Genesis Project, Inc. seeks to counteract the increase in illegal and prescription drug abuse in the Titusville area. With the assistance of a grant, the “Zero Tolerance Marketing Campaign” informed, educated and provided treatment referral information to help affected people and families. $1,750
Jan. 2006 Unrestricted The Meadville Area Free Clinic received a grant to pay for one month of prescription vouchers for patients who cannot afford medical insurance, but earn too much to qualify for medical assistance. Patients can then begin treatment without concern for how to afford their medication. $1,000
Jan. 2006 Unrestricted A grant to the Penn Lakes Girl Scout Council, Inc. implemented the “Uniquely Me” program at William Gill Commons to teach girls about positive self-image, stress management and healthy living. With higher self-esteem, participants were more likely to do better in school and less likely to succumb to negative peer pressure. $900
Jan. 2006 Lintner Titusville Renaissance, Inc. received a grant towards a project to help beautify downtown with decorative banners to welcome visitors. $1,350
Jan. 2006 Lintner An intergenerational picnic, bringing together school-age children and senior citizens for a day of socialization and interactive music, art and technology programs was hosted by the Titusville Senior Citizens Corporation with the help of a grant. $1,500
Jan. 2006 Unrestricted Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community received a grant towards purchase of a wheelchair-accessible bus, which keeps residents active in the community by transporting them to local shopping areas and social and cultural events. $500
July 2006 Unrestricted/Franklin Big Brothers and Sisters of Crawford County provides adult mentors to improve children’s self-esteem, keep them active in school and away from alcohol and illegal drugs. With assistance from a grant, the organization’s Meadville office was insulated to reduce heating costs. $1,380

July 2006 Unrestricted Center for Family Services’ “Parenting Together Project” teaches parenting and nurturing skills to help people raise strong and healthy children and prevent abuse. A grant was made towards the purchase of a computer for the project. $600
July 2006 Unrestricted Through “Project Warm Winter” the Crawford County Mental Health Awareness Program (CHAPS) distributed and installed temporary weatherization products in the homes of low-income people to reduce their heating costs. A grant defrayed the cost of weatherization products such as window kits and weather stripping. $1,500
July 2006 Lintner The Titusville Area Hospital continued to improve the oral health of the community through the work of their Dental Health Services mobile unit. Several dental instruments were purchased with a grant. $2,000
July 2006 Lintner The Titusville Council on the Arts presents high-quality cultural programs to the community. They were able to sell tickets for a concert by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Brass at reasonable prices with assistance from a grant. $500
