Foundation
Flexibility
Recognizing
that tomorrow's needs
may differ from today's, Foundation funds can be reassessed over time
to ensure the original charitable vision is still intact and
appropriate to the community.
Over the course of time, many
noble causes have been supported by philanthropy, but changing
attitudes and circumstances have made some such causes obsolete. using
the Foundation's variance power, funds can be redirected. For example,
funds set aside for the abolition of slavery might today be applied to
minority education; funds to find a cure for polio could be redirected
to Alzheimer's research; and funds for promoting temperance in the
prohibition era might now be used for alcohol abuse treatment.
