Lucille Runkel Nursing Scholarship Fund The Lucille Runkel Nursing Scholarship is presented annually to a resident of Crawford County, Pennsylvania or Mercer County, Pennsylvania who wishes to become a Registered Nurse and are matriculating or enrolling in an accredited two-year community college or four-year college/university in a program leading to an associate degree in nursing or bachelor of science in nursing. Mary Lucille (Lucille) Runkel was born in Grove City, Pennsylvania. After working to earn money for tuition, she went to nursing school in New Castle, Pennsylvania. She spent more than fifty years working as a Registered Nurse in Greenville, Meadville, Kittaning, Mercer and Cochranton, Pennsylvania as well as at the Polk State School. Lucille also raised three children—all while working the night shift. She loved caring for people and devising creative ways to help them recover. She was curious, gentle, friendly, ambitious and determined.
