Schetroma Bequest to Benefit Four Organizations

The Crawford Heritage Community Foundation has received bequests from the estate of Russell L. Schetroma amounting to more than $2.3 million. The Russell L. Schetroma Fund will support the Meadville Public Library, Westar Institute, Chautauqua Institution’s Department of Religion and the Energy and Mineral Law Foundation. The fund is a permanent endowment and will provide grants annually to all four organizations.

“I lived next door to Russ and his dog Hachiko for many years. He had many noble attributes—his intellect, religious devotion, love for animals and the arts. Not only was he a philanthropist, he probably could have lectured us about the Greek roots of the word, explaining that it was a person who expresses altruism for the betterment of mankind,” says Christian Maher, executive director of the community foundation. “I’m humbled that he entrusted the foundation with fulfilling his legacy.”

The Crawford Heritage Community Foundation has grown to more than $22 million in assets under management. They now manage 140 permanently endowed funds from which they have distributed more than $7 million in grants since 1998. Those funds benefit more than 140 different organizations, scholarships and charitable purposes.
